I stumbled upon a few interesting articles on character development within various writing forums. I thought the conversation was interesting because a lot of writers create backstories for each of their characters. They have a character file, folder, or notebook that contain everything about their characters.
Name, demographics, family history, ambitions, likes, dislikes, dialogue, and more.
It’s really interesting what other writers are using to help them stay connected to their characters and most importantly…motivated.
One of my goals for the beginning of this new year is to get to know my protagonist better. I’ll call her “M” for now.
I love her and can’t wait to share more.
But after several revisions, I found myself losing touch with her. It became clear that I needed to know “M” and not just about her. I’d like to explore the world that she lives in and why she does… well, the things she does.
One of the best exercise in writing motivation is to reconnect with your character in some way. For me it can be either visual (art or photos) and music. So I began revisiting her favorite music. Bands that she likes.
Retro stuff like KC & the Sunshine Band, The Pretenders, Wolf & Cub, Ssshheee, New Radicals, Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephants, The Strokes, and The Kooks…just to name a few.
The Pretenders is perhaps her cool girl vibe coming out. It’s her retro side. Something that I don’t think she realizes is what makes her different. Maybe that’s why “C” the boy that falls for her, is blown away when he first sees her. The feeling isn’t mutual for her…at first, so this isn’t a love at first sight story for “M”.
“M’s” favorite line from this song, Message Of Love:
Me and you, every night, every day
We’ll be together always this way
Your eyes are blue like the heavens above
Talk to me darlin’ with a message of love
She has one best friend (Anna)
-gifted in music, prefers the violin and piano
-loves dancing in front of her mirror
-loves drawing, art, doodling on her binder and notebooks when she’s bored
-is a good girl
-wants to attend Juilliard
In another post I’ll share more about my visuals that I use. For now, these are just a few thoughts I had.
Okay…back to work!
